Klein Blue Hills and White Cliff in Shanghai

Wutopia Lab

The Chinese firm Wutopia Lab, founded by Yu Ting, has transformed an industrial yard in Shanghai’s Pudong District into a mixed-use cultural space characterized by wave-shaped roofs of blue aluminum and translucent plastic. Named Klein Blue Hills and White Cliff, the two pavilions flank an existing brick chimney that has been repurposed as a cigar lounge.

On the north side, Klein Blue Hills is clad in aluminum panels with a blue tone inspired by the signature color of the French artist Yves Klein. The fish-skin pattern is easy to adapt to the undulations. Inside, the steel structure is left exposed, painted white. Behind is a large round window.

The smaller building, White Cliff, rises on a circular pool of water. Clad in PVC, it looks like a camping tent and harbors a whisky bar. The interior is a solid geometrical form, also white, with the floor presenting a bold tiger print.
