Hovering Kan-Too showroom in Zhongshan

Wutopia Lab

Transforming the urban landscape of the city of Zhongshan, China, the showroom known as Hovering Kan-Too – built for the residential real estate developer Vanke – is a translucent white volume crowned with orange aluminum crests. The shapes and colors evoke the nearby mountains and reinterpret elements of local architectural tradition in a contemporary language.

The translucent skin of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) ‘floats’ at the base of the building, and at the top, on the roof terrace, is an open-air auditorium. The dynamic spirit of large curves and irregular cuts rising and dropping continues inside with orange cave-like spaces. On the second floor, the halls are designed as independent volumes with sloping ceilings, like a small white town.
