A Renaissance prince in the full sense, Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy was besides a capable statesman a true lover and patron of the arts. It was his treasure of classical sculpture that would form the core of the archaeology museum founded in the 18th century by his descendants: an institution which after occupying various buildings in Turin has found a definitive home in the piano terra of the city’s royal palace. The central corridor proves perfect for displaying the collection around it, a Wunderkammer where Mesopotamian tablets, Etruscan steles, and imperial busts are carefully placed on bespoke display supports, which are painted in the same metalized black of the walls and floor so as to highlight the pieces.
