Juilliard School in Tianjin

Diller Scofidio + Renfro

Located in the Yujiapu Financial District of the port city of Tianjin, in China’s Hebei province, this center for music and performing arts is the second project that the firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro has completed for the Juilliard School, following the 2009 expansion of the New York campus.

Beside the Hai River rises a building of glass, steel, concrete, and wooden panels. Four faceted volumes harbor an educational program, a library, offices, a concert hall seating 690, a recital auditorium for 299, and a black box theater for 225. Five windowed bridges containing classrooms and rehearsal spaces crisscross in a main foyer, which is bathed in daylight coming in through large skylights, and which at ground level opens out to the surrounding gardens through different entrances and glazed facades.
