David Chipperfield Architects Berlin has in collaboration with Atelier Loidl Landschaftsarchitekten won the competition to carry out a development on Schützenstrasse, in the heart of Munich, having submitted a scheme characterized by functional diversity and the incorporation of plants at all levels. Accommodating a public program that includes cultural facilities, stores, cafés, and restaurants, the permeable ground floor presents pillars of reinforced concrete. The volumes vary in scale, becoming smaller towards the top, where there are office floors in a timber hybrid construction. The facade is structured by thin green profiles of anodized aluminum which are 100% recyclable. Highly flexible spaces, energy and resource efficiency, and close attention to user comfort form the project’s conceptual foundation.
