Berro House in Madrid

Jiménez & Linares

Elena Jiménez and Abelardo Linares did a thorough overhaul of a single-family home built in the 1920s, located next to the Quinta del Fuente del Berro Park, in the Salamanca neighborhood. Once the sculptor Jorge Oteiza’s Madrid residence, it was much deteriorated and its facades had undergone numerous modifications. Research undertaken in the Archivo de la Villa de Madrid, the city archives, led to the discovery of old blueprints, and it was decided that the original image of the building should be restored: a white volume with large windows and a Roman-style tiled roof, surrounded by a garden. The central staircase is wrapped in a wire mesh of laser-cut white-lacquered stainless steel that acts as a huge screen.
