Cabane 7L in Rome

Manuel Bouzas

As part of the third Festival des Cabanes, held at Villa Medici in Rome, the temporary pavilion Cabane 7L gives visitors the chance to enjoy views of the Renaissance gardens through the treetops. Raised entirely with firwood boasting sustainability certification, it is one of six structures on display at the experimental architecture event that focuses on the concept of the cabin.

The structure consists of six wooden portal frames supporting two platforms: one at ground level and the other at a height of 7 meters. The first welcomes visitors and hosts public events, while the second serves as a lookout point. A linear staircase built with CLT braces the structure diagonally, replicating the number of steps of the original spiral staircase inside the palace. Th estructure culminates in a V-shaped roof. All the beams were industrially processed and assembled on the site through dovetailing.

Running through 29 September at the pavilion is an array of cultural activities organized by the French Academy in Rome – founded by Louis XIV in 1666 and based in the 16th-century Villa Medici since 1803 – and Libraririe 7L, founded by Karl Lagerfeld in Paris in 1999 and acquired by Chanel in 2021.
