MPavilion 2019 in Melbourne

Glenn Murcutt

Every year since 2014 the Naomi Milgron Foundation commissions an architect to design a summer structure for Melbourne called MPavilion, and the sixth has just opened in Queen Victoria Gardens. The Australian architect Glenn Murcutt conceived a simple rectangular form and a roof of tensile membrane which, translucent and curved, drew inspiration from the aerodynamic form of an airplane wing. On the inside it incorporates LEDs that, when turned on, make the white building look extra-light. The temporary pavilion faces north to maximize views of the Yarra River, while a textile electronic protection system makes it possible to close up the south side. Murcutt’s MPavilion will be the venue of various events until 22 March 2020.
