Floating Farm Dairy in Rotterdam

Goldsmith

In Merwehaven, a harbor zone of Rotterdam, on the right bank of the Meuse River, rises this agricultural construction where dairy products are made and processed. The design by Goldsmith Company, a local practice, is based on nautical principles, taking into account the progressive rise of sea levels and the frequent flooding of the Netherlands. The organization, the structure, and the use of materials all collude to maximize the building’s buoyancy and stability. In the tripartite stacking, the heavy elements are submerged. Able to take in 40 cows, the floating dairy combines technical installations – for storage, processing, and production – with robots for milking and manure-cleaning, solar panels, and a rainwater collecting and purifying system. Under a huge cantilevering roof, the 2,000-square-meter complex also includes a route for visitors to follow without interrupting dairy activities.
