Foster + Partners has been appointed to design the first new construction to go up on the historic Châteaux Margaux estate for 200 years, and to refurbish existing buildings. Though originally planned as a farming village in the 19th century, the estate began producing wine back in the 16th century. Today, the international team has set out to preserve that morphology, suggesting a subtle intervention in which the new volume, designed using today’s advanced technology and materials, dons a vernacular attire: recycling clay tiles from abandoned buildings on the estate, maintaining the same eaves line, and completing and balancing the estate thanks to a strategic layout. The project has been designed to the last detail by Norman Foster, as can be seen in the handwritten comments alongside sketches drawn by the British architect.
