Eduardo Souto de Moura, Oporto (1952)
Belonging to an educated, conservative, and Catholic family in Braga, son of an ophthalmologist trained in the clinic of Dr. Barraquer, in Barcelona, the young Eduardo studied in a strict Italian school originating from the times of Mussolini, more advanced than the Portuguese schools of the time and where great importance was given to drawing, something that was to be highly useful in his subsequent architectural work. With a jurist brother who is an art connoisseur and became Prosecutor General of the Republic, and a doctor brother, Eduardo focused his professional career on engineering, to end up in architecture at the time of the April 25th Revolution, which initiated a period of extraordinary vitality and intellectual curiosity, when structuralism or semiotics were more important than urban planning or construction. When Nuno Portas launched new residential plans, the young students turned to Álvaro Siza, who, being twenty years older, had the experience they were lacking, and this was the beginning of the close relationship between both architects, which was to last for their entire careers, even becoming family – Eduardo is married to a niece of Siza – and occupying studios in the same building...
