Schiphol Airport, Lamela

Great Roof

30/06/2018

The Spanish-Dutch team formed by the practices Estudio Lamela and KAAN Architecten, in collaboration with the engineering firms Ineco and ABT, has won the competition for the commision to enlarge Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, carrying the day over co-finalists like MVRDV, OMA, SOM, and UNStudio. Encompassing a built area of 100,500 square meters, the new terminal – whose principal stroke is a modular roof measuring 180 x 150 meters – seeks to blend into the airport complex by resorting to strategies like formal simplicity and the abundant entrance of natural light. Construction work is scheduled to begin in 2020 and the building is to open its doors and be operational by the year 2023.
