There are ‘fox artists’ and there are ‘hedgehog artists.’ The former go about leapfrogging, they know many things; the latter know one big thing, limiting themselves to a single discovery which they devote their entire careers to. To this second category, without a doubt, belongs the Italian Giorgio Morandi, master of the modern still life whose work these days – in an exhibition being held at the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao – is being compared with that of some of the past grand masters of painting, including the French Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin and the Spanish painters of the 17th century, to a great extent the inventors of the still life genre. The show will run through 6 October.
