Thomas Struth in Bilbao

Existential Testimony

30/09/2019

Scheduled to open at Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum on 2 October, and to stay there until 19 January, ‘Thomas Struth’ is the most extensive showing of the career of the acclaimed German photographer born in 1954. More than 130 works – including a number never seen in public before – will systematically address the themes obsessively frequented by Struth, from the instability of social structures and the fragility of human existence – depicted through disturbing ‘family portraits’ – to nature, culture, and public space, X-rayed in iconic series which are much admired by architects, such as ‘Unconscious Places,’ ‘Museum Photographs,’ and ‘New Pictures from Paradise.’
