BIA Awards: First Edition

A New Biennial

30/11/2014

Norman Foster is the first recipient of the BIA Award of Bilbao Bizkaia Architecture, a platform recently created by the Basque Country and Navarre Institute of Architects. The prize acknowledges the role that the Metro of Bilbao has played in regenerating the city. Building this urban infrastructure was an incomparable experience for Foster, for whom seeing the tunneling machines underground is something “near religious” because it makes one “aware of the forces of nature.” The tribute to the British architect, which took place in the Guggenheim Museum atrium, culminated a series of events surrounding a congress that, each time with a different theme, will be held every two years with the aim of becoming a reference in architecture.
