The young Anni Fleichsmann in 1922 received a Christmas card illustrated with a reproduction of Giotto’s Flight into Egypt. It was from Josef Albers, eleven years her senior. Thus began the most famous romance of Bauhaus lore, and a twin journey that was to last more than half a century. Although each one worked independently from the start – when Anni could not be with Josef in the school’s stained glass workshop because it was reserved for men, she settled for weaving, a sector she would end up revolutionizing – they were always supportive of each other, ever enriching one another, and this close relationship comes to the fore in a show being held at the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern through 19 June.
