The artist Carmen Calvo (1950) is only the third woman ever to be given the Julio González Award since its inception more than twenty years ago, and to celebrate this the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern in the city of her birth is until 2 November hosting a major retrospective of her oeuvre. Although she considers herself first and foremost a painter, she also works in installations, drawing, photography, and the collage in her endeavor to reelaborate images using discarded and found things, as in her wellknown pieces crafted with children’s dolls or fragments of manikins, always with a critical stand on gender inequality and a strong upholding of feminist themes in general.
