What kind of contribution can contemporary architecture make to garden design? Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, along with the recently deceased Alvin Boyarsky, were responsible for selecting and coordinating the construction of small pavilions for the intersections between the avenues of the Osaka Garden Expo. Their purpose was none other than to configure public spaces.

Cook & Hawley, MacDonal & Salter, Peter Wilson, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Gigantes and Zenghelis, Torres and Martínez Lapeña, Morphosis, Andrea Branzi, Ryuji Suzuki, and Hajime Yatsuka, each supported by a Japanese sponsor, built their follies. The Architectural Association of London held an exhibition of all these small architectures from February 8 to March 22. The catalog also includes all of them, accompanied by their project descriptions and texts by Isozaki, Cedric Price, and Yoji Takai, as well as the transcription of a roundtable discussion where the architects spoke about the imperatives of design, the relationship between man, nature, and technology, and the notions of madness and excess in architecture.
