On 2 October Museo ICO officially opens ‘José María García de Paredes: Meeting Spaces,’ an exhibition curated by the architect Ángela García de Paredes for the birth centenary of one of Spain’s leading architects in the second half of the 20th century, known mainly for his public buildings, major concert halls standing out among them.
The show gives a panorama of the subject’s most representative works, presenting a broad perspective of his architectural legacy and highlighting his innovative approach and influence on modern Spanish architecture. It covers four decades of practice – from 1950 to 1990 – through hitherto unpublished images of his most iconic projects, such as the National Auditorium of Music and the Aquinas student dormitory (with Rafael de La-Hoz), both in Madrid. Moreover, his oeuvre is placed in the context of the rich cultural, architectural, and artistic scene of his time, many other prominent figures of which collaborated with him. In this, his bond with music takes pride of place.
The exhibition is the fruit of collaboration between Fundación ICO and the Reina Sofía Museum, which in close alliance with Ángela and Manuel García de Paredes has carried out a rigorous inventory of original material from the García de Paredes Archive, donated in 2021 by the family to the museum, which in turn has loaned Museo ICO more than 400 items (plans, models, drawings, and photographs). The exhibition catalog – 192 pages hardbound – has been edited and published by Fundación ICO and Arquitectura Viva.
