The Barcelona practice of Jordi Badia (BAAS), in collaboration with the local firms Grupa 5 Architekci and Maleccy Biuro Projectowe, recently completed the new Faculty of Radio and Television of the University of Silesia in the Polish town of Katowice, on a site previously occupied by an electric transformer station. The brief of the 2011 competition proposed demolishing this industrial facility, long in disuse, but BAAS decided to preserve it, turn it into a library, and build on top of it an abstract volume wrapped with brick openwork: a solution intended as a way of incorporating the idea of recycling into the formal expression of the new complex. Inside is a low volume with a central courtyard.
