A sports facility in Munich, close to the Olympic Stadium designed by Frei Otto and Günther Behnisch, was recently inaugurated. Named SAP Garden and located on the site of the old velodrome, it is the new home of the EHC Red Bull ice hockey team and an additional venue for FC Bayern Basketball. Besides a main arena, the complex features three training rinks for use by schools, clubs, and the public at large, hidden under an artificial hill. 3XN devised an oval form which is asymmetrical in both height and shape, resulting in an organic look which, with the green roof, integrates the building into its environment.

The seating capacity is 10,700 for ice hockey and 11,500 for basketball. The playing surface adapts to the needs of every event through a system by which stands can change in height and inclination. Mobile tiers are added for basketball games.

Rising seven levels, four of them above ground, the complex includes shops, a restaurant, offices and conference rooms, a parking garage, and a public terrace on top with views over the park and the city.
