The firm 3XN has won the invitation-only competition to build an art center in the South Korean city of Chungnam. The scheme draws inspiration from the movement of an orchestra conductor’s baton and from the arc that a ballet dancer’s pointed toe makes when pirouetting in the air. Balancing a rational concept with an expressive form, the program’s key elements are grouped efficiently, and the gentle arc forms of the roof are determined by the heights and volumes inside the building. Construction is programmed for completion in 2028/2029.
