The Serpentine Gallery’s 23rd summer pavilion at Kensington Gardens in London will be visitable from 7 June to 27 October. Designed by the Korean architect Minsuk Cho of the firm Mass Studies, it is inspired by vernacular wood architecture in his country. Titled ‘Archipelagic Void,’ it is a five-pointed star with a central void.
The five arms are irregular (no two are alike) and serve different functions independently. Their roofs also vary in size, shape, and height, and are connected by a circular steel ring over the central courtyard. Sitting on concrete pedestals, the modules are: an Auditorium with a pitched ceiling and side openings clad in pink-toned polycarbonate; a Library of Unread Books, an artistic initiative of Hernan Chong and Renée Staal; a Gallery with a sound installation playing music by the composer Jang Young Gyu; a pyramidal Play Tower with orange nets inviting visitors to play; and a Tea House.
