Oratory on IESE campus in Madrid

This 105-square-meter chapel is located at the heart of the new building on the Madrid campus of the IESE Business School. The project seeks to accentuate this central position through a curvilinear geometry, with concave formations conducive to concentration and prayer. The spaces preceding and annexed to the oratory (ante-oratory, confesional, sacristy, priest’s office) serve as transition between the building and the actual oratory.

The perimetral wooden cladding becomes sculptural relief in the form of bowls that progressively concentrate as they reach the plane of the altarpiece, where the relief continues in golden metal. The felt ceiling has an acoustic effect and gives warmth. The benches were made with boards from a solid piece of oakwood, held up by plates of lacquered steel. The joints and assemblages are simple, in such a way that how they are executed is easy to understand. The baptismal font is carved from a single piece of natural stone.
