The Italian practice of Massimo Alvisi and Junko Kirimoto has designed a new exhibition pathway for the Basilica di Massenzio in Rome, commissioned by the Colosseum Archaeoogical Park. The purpose is to bring out all the historical value of the monument, through a contemporary oepration that is both respectful and functional, redefining the visitor experience. Following the restoration of the central nave, this project revolves around three key elements: a new multifunctional structure designed as a stage, a full refurbishment of the floor, and the setting up of two information panels.
The stage is the focal point of the redesign of the visitor route, reestablishing the transversal connection between the three aísles. Constructed through a modular system using steel, it is clad in panels of birch plywood, which is rhythmically marked by wooden slats that become denser toward the center.
The stage area for cultural events has stepped seating in front, while side ramps and staircases facilitate circulation between aisles. Carefully integrated lighting and steel railings ensure safety and comfort. Benches positioned at the sides of the stage offer moments of pause during guided tours. The intervention extends to the forecourt, which has been repaved with natural materials (earth and lime), and to the installation of metal informational tótotems equipped with audiovisual systems that do much to enhance visitors’ understanding of the monument. A balance between memory and modernity is established, expanding the ways by which this extraordinary space, one of Italy’s most important heritate sites, can be experienced.
