Højvangen Church in Skanderborg

In Denmark, where more and more temples are closing down, the new Højvangen Church is a notable exception. Located in a forest on the outskirts of Skanderborg, it is the first to go up in the area in over 500 years.

The 1,500-square-meter complex is conceived as a space for both individual reflection and community life. The architectural design integrates the building in the landscape through a facade of light brick.

Unlike traditional churches, this one has no central nave, nor any defined front or back. The only reference for direction is a baptismal font at the center. Natural light plays an essential role, coming in through perforated walls to create a changing atmosphere for spiritual experience.

The flexibility of the interior is also reflected in the furniture. Henning Larsen collaborated with the Danish manufacturer Brdr. Krüger in designing Ekko, a stackable chair created expressly for this project. The mobile furniture makes it possible to reconfigure the space for different uses, from religious ceremonies to cultural events and everyday encounters.
