This rental vacation house – the Swiss architect’s first permanent construction within the United Kingdom – is located in Devon County, in a beautiful southern English landscape of meadows and trees. The house replaces a residence that was demolished in the 1940s, atop a hill, of which only a hexagonal courtyard and 20-meter-tall pine trees that were part of the natural environment remained. Fragmented into a series of heavy irregular blocks interspersed with large openings framing views of the surrounding scenery, the building presents thick walls of concrete that has been rammed by hand, the texture of which clearly shows the successive layers marking a day’s work. The roughness of the house’s walls strikes a contrast with the carefully rendered limestone floors where no two pieces are alike – designed with a bespoke pattern that adapts to the dimensions of each slab brought in from the quarry – and with the light frames holding the large panes of glass in place.
