Too small to be a building and excessively large to be a sculpture, it is impossible to define the ‘Empty Space’ in functional terms. Surrounded by birch trees, this white, patinated cube offers itself as a place of meditation for resident artists of the neighboring Tapper Foundation. A door set flush with the facade of the construction is the only link between the forest and the interior, a dark space that endeavors to sharpen spatial perception through touch, hearing and smell, although to the detriment of sight. One crosses the threshold and the aroma of the woods gives way to the invigorat-ing scent of the enclosure’s timber. Visitors may then open their arms wide to feel the walls and perceive with their hands the dimensions of the interior, while the loose boards of the flooring resound to the mute rhythm of their own footsteps...
