Office building in Amador de los Ríos, Madrid
Estudio Lamela

A 1,700-square-meter office block at Calle Amador de los Ríos 5 in Madrid, built in 1966 and owned by Primework Properties, has been renovated. The ground level, the basement, and the fourth floor have been partly restructured, with facades replaced and an overall fitting-out of the tertiary-sector spaces.

The project aimed to update the facilities, make them more energy-efficient, reinforce the building’s structure, and comply with universal standards on accessibility, optimizing functionality across the board. The actions taken were based on an exhaustive study of the original construction. The composition of the new facade respects the surrounding buildings, adapting to their general rhythm, cadence, and typology. Traditional solutions have been incorporated, such as the double facade, the pergola, and the colonnade. It was decided that the facade should show only two materials, glass and stone, concealing joineries. The twisted stone louvers make the facade change in appearance as the day goes by. The side facing Amador de los Ríos measures 11 meters, a rather narrow bay that posed the challenge of designing the facade in a way that would give a sense of breadth, an impression of larger dimensions. The roof offers employees a space for breaks, with plants and tiered seating for events.
