Like a Slavic House of Usher, as it were, an 18th-century mansion in a little village seemed condemned to a slow agony for lack of municipal resources to either restore or demolish it. Paradoxically, however, the impact of time has been capitalized on to ensure that it is preserved. Following minimal consolidation works in which unemployed neighbors took part, small rooms were inserted into several of the building’s large halls, in an operation that could be reversed at any time. Interconnected by metal-grid catwalks, these small spaces are opportunities for ruin lovers to spend a night in full comfort, and in passing help fund more long-term refurbishment projects...[+]
