Macau Central Library

Mecanoo

The new library will rise by Tap Seac Square in the historical center of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its grid facade recalls the exterior of the building that stands on the site, the former Hotel Estoril. Where the main entrance is, the skin of the volumen will open like a book, and the pattern on it echoes the bookshelves inside.

Interconnected spaces lead users from the square to the generous reading rooms on the top level. The 15,000-square-meter project also includes exhibition galleries, a café, and offices.

A mural of the Roman goddess Fortuna had pride of place on the old hotel’s facade, and the design by Mecanoo preserves it, making it part of the library’s lobby.

Completion of construction work is programmed for 2025.
