High Flights

In the year 1965 the port authority of the state of Oregon’s leading city commissioned the local practice ZGF Architects to draw up a masterplan for the expansion of its flight terminal, which is a strategic point in connecting with Alaska up north and the Pacific to the west. Thus began an association that for six decades has thrived in renovations and in enlargements of the hub, the latest of which, completed just this summer, is the most ambitious to date. The airport’s central building has doubled its space for operations, unifying installations and services under an enormous display of woodwork that gently undulates and is nuanced by generous skylights, completely redefining the experience of air-travel passengers. Prefabricated to minimize alteration of the way the premises function, the mixed structure of steel and timber sourced from the vicinity has made it possible to achieve a substantial reduction in the carbon footprint of the construction.
