Designed by the Dutch firm MVRDV, this mixed-use office building distributing 6,500 square meters in twelve floors is located in Esslingen, a city of the Stuttgart region of Baden-Württemberg, in southern Germany. Its fragmented and interactive facade of sintered glass incorporates photovoltaic cells and QR codes with information about the people, history, and landscsape of Esslingen. A three-dimensional map showing the city’s topography can be found at the bottom of the construction and it rises to a height of 40 meters, with stairs and terraces, to form a public entrance. The extruded blocks of the gridded facade give the building a profile which the architects describe as a ‘pixeled map.’ Construction is to start in 2020.
