The duo formed by Louisa Hutton (Norwich, 1957) and Matthias Sauerbruch (Konstanz, 1955) discuss their origins, from their training with Peter Cook at the Architectural Association in London to their first professional experiences in the studios of the Smithsons and OMA, respectively; and highlights some of the works that have marked their extensive career, including the initiatory GSW or the experimental Photonics Center.

Louisa Hutton: We met in London in the early ‘80s, in Peter Cook’s unit at the Architectural Association.

Matthias Sauerbruch: Before arriving in London, I was studying in Berlin, which had been turned upside down by the ’68 movement. By the time I arrived there, the generation that had set off all the experimental changes had disappeared, and what was left was really a kind of desert. Engaged people like Walter Hämer or Ludwig Leo were focused on other matters, such as an IBA, and those who were still at the university were not so interesting. That’s why I felt I needed to go somewhere else. I applied for a scholarship, and because I had encountered Peter Cook in Berlin giving a lecture, I decided to go to the AA. How about you?
