
Unlike Gregorio Fernández or Juan Martínez Montañés with their large works, Luisa Roldán was more known for small pieces and the exquisite crafting of her clay figurines, which some considered “more suitable to her station and sex.” The National Museum of Sculpture in Valladolid takes it upon itself to prove this fallacious in a comprehensive retrospective that demonstrates how this artist who managed to overcome so many barriers of her time – King Charles II named her Court Sculptor and the arts writer Antonio Palomino likened her to her father, the celebrated Pedro Roldán – took on a variety of themes, materials, and formats with great talent.
