Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, the Aga Khan IV, spiritual leader of Ismaeli Muslims, has died at the age of 88 in Lisbon. Born in Geneva (Switzerland) in 1936, throughout his life he did not only carry out programs in key fields like education, healthcare, social development, and the environment. He has also left a huge legacy in the promotion of Islamic culture, architecture, and historical heritage preservation.
He instituted the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture, given every three years since 1977 in recognition of contemporary architectural, urbanistic, and landscaping projects in the Muslim world that address social needs while paying attention to environmental sustainability and cultural continuity and on making a positive impact on communities.
