Founded in 1964 by the Valencians Rafael Solbes (1940-1981), Joan Antoni Toledo (1940-1995)
– who would leave the group two years later – and Manuel Valdés (1942), Equipo Crónica describes the sociopolitical reality of the last years of Franco’s dictatorship and the beginning of the transition years through the critical appropriation of references to history and art; articulated in thematic series, their body of work can be inscribed within pop art but, unlike this movement, it is directed towards a collective conscience rather than to the individual experience of the spectator. A retrospective in Bilbao, with 146 works, covers all the periods of a creative project that lasted until Solbes’s death in 1981.
