Accustomed to thinking of the family house as a consumer unit, we often forget about its essential role as a unit of production. Essential in the rural world, where agricultural exploitation and the residence are inseparable, and no less important in the urban dwelling of the artisan or merchant, the house remains to this day – and perhaps will be even more in the future – a workplace.
