Born in Bonn and based in New York, the artist and photographer Christoph Gielen explores in his work the intersections between art and environmental policies in relation to land use. The book released by the Berlin publisher Jovis under the title Ciphers (codes), includes a selection of photographs of the outskirts of American cities captured by the artist from a helicopter over the course of seven years. The images reflect the unique and disquieting geometric beauty of urban sprawl when seen from far up above, and through them Gielen proposes a critical reflection on the occupation of territory and prompts us to reassess the future of our ecosystem... [+]
