The Modern Procession, New York (2002)  

Trained as an architect, Francis Alÿs (Antwerp, 1959) did not begin his artistic career until the early 1990s, after moving from Belgium to Mexico. There he devoted much of his time to walking around the city, turning the street into his true field of action, so his work includes video installations and performances, as well as drawings, oil paintings and watercolors, always represented through an at once poetic and political reading of the place. In experiences such as ‘When Faith Moves Mountains’, set within the context of the last years of the dictatorship of Fujimori in Peru, Alÿs suggests that, using the collective energy as an engine for production, change is possible…[+]
