Phase one of the competition to revamp Bilbao’s Museum of Fine Arts has ended with the shortlisting of Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos; Rafael Moneo; Foster + Partners with LM Uriarte Arkitektura; BIG with AZAB and Proskene; Snøhetta with Foraster Arquitectos; and UTE SANAA Jimusho with Iñaki Aurrekoetxea & Bazkideak.
Chaired by the museum’s director, Miguel Zugaza, the jury – the members of which include Matxalen Acasuso, Zuriñe Antoñana, Luis Fernández-Galiano, Miren Lorea Bilbao, Gorka Martínez, José Ángel María Muñoz, Mikel Ocio, and Patricia Urquiola – selected the six teams out of 57 participants. In the final phase, the designs will be submitted anonymously with a motto. The finalists have three months to draw up their projects for the renovation of the museum’s current 2,250 square meters and the addition of 5,140, respecting the two existing buildings.
The winner will be announced at the end of July.
