Amid ecological pomp the Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II, inaugurated Copenhagen Zoo’s brand new Panda House, a pavilion carried out by Bjarke Ingels at a cost of 24 million euros. Beyond evoking yin and yang, the unique circular indoor-outdoor enclosure enables visitors to go on a 360º promenade around the ursine habitat, and observe the life of a pair of bamboo eaters that the Chinese government has loaned to the Scandinavian country on the promise of payment of an annual fee of a million euros. The ‘panda diplomacy’ has been pounced upon by public opinion, for fear that such a pact with China can potentially undermine criticism of the lack of democracy in the Asian giant.
