From December 2024 until February 2025, the ADI Design Museum of Milan has welcomed the Architecture for Dogs project, in which Kengo Kuma, Ma Yansong, Shigeru Ban, Sou Fujimoto, Toyo Ito, Kazuyo Sejima, Atelier Bow-Wow, and MVRDV have offered, along with many other studios, their interpretations of the traditional dog house. Setting aside the log cabin with pitched roof archetype, these personal alternatives have allowed adapting each small habitat to the different breeds, crossbreeds, and their specific needs: from proposals with ramps, pillows, carpets, and benches, to projects that suggest a vertical organization.
Curated by Kenya Hara – designer and art director of Muji –, the exhibition was organized with the goal of showing how architecture and design can serve as tools to examine the relationship between dogs and their built environmment. In addition, the inclusive character of the initiative has extended to public participation: anyone can access the assembly instructions for the different dog houses and download the blueprints for free from the project’s official website.
