Pantheon in Madrid

Ábaton

The Madrid firm Ábaton – established in 1998 by Camino Alonso, Ignacio Lechón, and Carlos Alonso – has in collaboration with Marta Hombrados designed this funerary monument in a cemetery located in the northwestern part of the Autonomous Community of Madrid.

With a pitched roof whose ridge rises 3.84 meters, the robust, freestanding concrete pantheon has a perimeter of 2.8 x 3.5 meters. The interior is clad in strips of chestnut wood and features a continuous bench across a columbarium that creates an atmosphere of reflection, beside a cross of golden proportions perforating one of the 20-centimeter-thick walls. The foundation is set inward to give the illusion that the construction is elevated and floating.
