Jean Nouvel  BIAD

In 2013, the jury of the NAMOC competition gave the first prize to the team of Jean Nouvel with BIAD (Beijing Institute of Architectural Design), choosing their proposal over those of Zaha Hadid and of Frank Gehry, who were shortlisted. Located in Olympic Park, a new district in Beijing north of the historic city, the project tries to translate and materialize the spirit of Chinese culture. Inspired in the simplicity of a brushstroke, the perforated facade gives the museum an incomplete and weightless appearance. With an area of 130,000 square meters, the building will house a research center and an auditorium, aside from galleries to display Chinese art from the Ming dynasty up to today.
