Centre des Cultures et Spiritualités Ewés in Notsé

Kéré Architecture

This complex devoted to the culture and historical heritage of the Ewé ethnic group is located in the city of Notsé, 80 kilometers from Lomé, the capital of Togo, in West Africa. Every first week of September since 1956, Ewé pilgrims have gathered in Notsé for the Agbogbozan festival, celebrating their fraternity and togetherness.

Covering 7,000 square meters, the masterplan drawn up by Kéré and already being implemented is located in Notsé, cradle of the Ewe people, and is arranged around the remains of the Agbogbo wall, which surrounded the city, and the Agbogbodzi Sanctuary, which sheltered their principal deity, due to which the project includes a spiral-shaped new tower. The Centre des Cultures et Spiritualités Ewés comprises the reconstructed royal palace, a shrine, an open-air amphitheater, an auditorium, a museum, and a restaurant. The inspiration for the design of the main entrance comes from the Ewe royal stool, a symbol of power. The ensemble of low buildings is executed with red laterite brick, a durable material that abounds in the area.

The Centre des Cultures et Spiritualités Ewés has been under construction since October, and completion is programmed for February 2026.
