Extension of Valfabbrica cemetery

Andrea Dragoni

In the countryside of the central Italian region of Umbria lies Valfabbrica, a village of medieval origin. The municipal cemetery outside the historic center was recently enlarged by Andrea Dragoni. It closes towards the new high-traffic road from which it is visible, and opens toward the interior of the old graveyard. A loggia punctuated by large-diameter columns serves as a threshold. The gallery’s linearity is interrupted by the chapel with its big opening framing the landscape. Interplays of lights and shadows flood these spaces, crossing the gallery from above, to symbolically comb the tombs with changing shapes.
