The Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany, will through 10 March 2019 be hosting ‘Victor Papanek: The Politics of Design,’ the first major retrospective ever to be put together to honor the Austrian designer, educator, and activist who settled in the United States in the year 1939 and there went on to pursue an intense career in research and teaching until his death in 1998. Papanek was a major critic of capitalist consumerism, and he was also, along with contemporaries like Richard Buckminster Fuller, a pioneer in design of the kind that more closely addressed real people’s needs in life, besides being artisanal and sustainable. Hence the current interest in Victor Papanek’s legacy.
