‘The Brutalist’, a frontrunner for the Oscars
In the list of nominations for the Oscars of 2025, The Brutalist is in the running for ten awards: Best Picture, Best Director (Brady Corbet), Best Actor (Adrien Brody), Best Supporting Actor (Guy Pearce), Best Supporting Actress (Felicity Jones), Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Editing, and Best Production Design.
Clocking in at three hours and a half, intermission included, The Brutalist is the story of a Jewish architect, a Holocaust survivor, who immigrates to Europe and settles in New York. It leads the nominations, second only to Emilia Pérez, which garners thirteen. Directed by Jacques Audiard, the latter is a Spanish-language French film that has become the most nominated non-English movie in the history of the awards of Hollywood’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu, also contends for ten categories. The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on 2 March at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
The Brutalist premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival in 1 September 2024 and notched the Silver Lion for best direction and the prize given by the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI). It has also brought home three Golden Globes (Best Motion Picture, Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, and Best Director).
