The Japanese studio SANAA, led by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, has been awarded the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The annual prize is recognition for people who have significantly influenced and transformed the world architectural scene, in this case by creating spaces that stand out for their simplicity, light, and elegance.

The prestigious accolade joins Sejima and Nishizawa’s already long list of distinctions earned, including the Pritzker in 2010, the Praemium Imperiale in 2022, and the Prix Charlotte Perriand in 2025.

Kazuyo Sejima (Ibaraki, 1956) and Ryue Nishizawa (Tokyo, 1966) work both as a team and individually, although most of their international projects have been carried out under the SANAA label, established in 1995.

The Kanazawa Museum of Contemporary Art, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, the Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne, the Musée du Louvre-Lens in Lens, the Università Bocconi campus in Milan, La Samaritaine department store in Paris, the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, and the extension of the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney are some of the awardees’ most significant works.
